ANNUAL EASYCARE SHEEP SOCIETY AGM & BREED SOCIETY FARM VISITS

The annual EasyCare Sheep Society AGM and farm visit weekend is hosted kind permission of:

As is usual for the Society over the last few years we intend to make a long weekend of the event.

On Friday 20th June we have arranged a private visit to the Acton Scott Heritage Farm at Church Stretton.  The tour starts at 2pm and lasts approximately 1.5hrs with coffee/tea and cake provided.  The museum doesn't usually open on a Friday so the working exhibits will not be available.  The price is £12 per person.  Please advise the Secretary, Louise Hobson on 07931 756972 if you want to attend.

The AGM will be held on SATURDAY 21ST JUNE 2025 starting at 10am

The day will start with the AGM, we will keep this to a minimum as we have plenty to occupy ourselves with through the day.

Hayden will be arranging an itinerary which will involve viewing his EasyCare sheep & chats about exporting genetics and methane collection calculating in his shedding sheep.  Hayden is a very progressive sheep farmer so there will be plenty to chat about.

SUNDAY 22ND JUNE 2025 

We will return to Hayden's farm at land he rents near Shrewsbury on the Sunday to continue the tours then will finish the day with Sunday lunch at a pub near where the sheep are.  The meal will need to be paid for by yourself.

This means two members of the committee have to spend time away from their own businesses to help promote the breed for everyone else.  We have two further volunteers to help on each of the days.  Hopefully, however, it will put the EasyCare sheep in front of a different audience.

FROM THE 2024 SELLING SEASON WE WILL ONLY ALLOW RAM LAMBS AND YEARLING RAMS TO BE SOLD WITH BOTH SCRAPIE AND MYOSTATIN RESULTS, IF YOU TEST, YOU MUST TEST FOR BOTH. SENIOR RAMS MAY BE PRESENTED WITH WHATEVER PAPERWORK YOU HAVE GOT AT THE TIME
 

We ask that breeders check their rams prior to selling. Do a check of the testicles, make sure the rams are good with their mobility etc as we will pull out anything we feel is not to breed standard [see the Breed Standard on the website] or is suspect in mouth, legs, feet, or testicles.

With regards to a fertility test we have reserved judgement on this as to be honest it simply states on the day it was tested it was fertile but from the sale in September to the rams going out at the beginning of November onwards anything can happen to them which is beyond the Society's control. Therefore, it is prudent to either put extra rams out or take up insurance.

Ewes must be sound in the udder, legs, and mouth. They must have fully shed their fleece without assistance. They must be clear eyed and free of any injury or lameness.

All rams and ewes presented for sale must be tagged with double tags bearing the word EasyCare or EC on their tags.

If you are MV accredited you will need to provide the paperwork beforehand to the auction mart and they will provide separate accommodation. All MV accredited stock is sold first into a clean ring. The Society does not currently require all stock to be MV accredited. Most, if not all markets ask that stock is dipped or jabbed for scab. Withdrawal dates must be noted and stated on the entry form.

With regards other health checks, if the vendor has carried out certain procedures e.g. Heptovac, worming etc we ask that this is made known prior to the sale so it can be put in the particulars. If NASAL tests have been taken to establish a ram's myostatin status AND scrapie status, again the reports for these tests must be shown to the market and the information presented in the particulars. We also recommend you laminate copies of the test results and put them on the selling pen as it makes it clear to prospective purchasers what they are buying. Provide the results to the purchaser after the sale so they have the results for their own records.

Any further health checks are entirely at the vendors discretion we would simply say that it is good farming practice to isolate newly purchased stock for a period to assess their health.

If the seller has in mind to make their stock available for export, they must be MV accredited, must have an up-to-date Brucella test and possibly more legislation could be in force by the time the September sales arrive so a visit to the Animal and Plant Health website is always a good idea.

As a Society we can only make a judgement based on what we see on the day. We make it clear to everyone to present strong, healthy stock in the best condition they can but without overlooking the fact that we are a commercial breed and purchasers don't expect rams to have been stoked full of food or preened and polished.

We do not issue pedigree certificates.

Finally, you must be a fully paid-up member to enter the Society Sales. Membership is £35 per annum.

2. All sheep offered for sale must be the property of a current member of the Society. All sheep must have EasyCare printed on management part of tag (easy to arrange with your own tag supplier) or an additional tag must be purchased from ECSS and inserted at sale.

3. Entry is open to MAEDI-VISNA and non MAEDIA-VISNA flocks. All relevant documentation must accompany all sheep. MV sheep will be sold as per individual market arrangements, please check with the Auctioneers for details.

4. Scrapie/Myostatin Genotyping is voluntary. If you test your sheep, please bring relevant certificates with you. It is the vendor’s responsibility not the Society or the Auctioneers, to provide these certificates for purchasers. Testing results should be included on entry forms. Tested Rams will be given priority in the Sale Order. SCRAPIE GENOTYPING is voluntary, if you scrapie genotype & or myostatin test, please enter results and bring certificates with you.  You MUST test for BOTH scrapie & myostatin if you are testing for myostatin

5. Sheep must be hornless and have shed their fleece with no signs of having been shorn. Any upgrading Ewes will be sold at end of sale.

6. Ram entries are limited to a maximum of 10 Rams IN TOTAL per vendor. Each vendor may bring Senior Rams no more than 3 and/or Ram Lambs no more than 3 and Yearling Rams within the total of 10 Rams.

7. All Rams will be offered for sale subject to an upset price which will be decided after consultation at the Society AGM of that year. Currently £300 for Yearling Rams and £250 for Senior Rams and Ram Lambs.

8. All sheep are warranted by vendors as correct in mouth and udder at time of sale.

9. All Rams will be sold in Guineas with a commission rate of 5.25%, all Females will be sold in £’s, with a commission of 5.25%. Commission will be split equally between the Auctioneers and the Society.

10. All entries must be made on official entry forms (attached) and must be completed in all respects. Entries must be accompanied by full entry fees (cheque) or be paid by BACS or by card direct to auctioneers. Entries will not be accepted into the catalogue if relevant fees are not forward, and Society Membership has not been paid

11. Substitutes are allowed. Details of substitutes must be logged with the Auctioneer one week prior to the sale. Any late entries are at the discretion of the Auctioneer and will be sold at the end of the sale list. Uncatalogued sheep will NOT be offered for sale.

12. All transactions, either by auction or by private treaty following the sale must be passed through the Auctioneers sale office.

13. Vendors shall have the right to place a reserve price on any or all of their sheep. This must be notified to the Auctioneers in writing, preferably before the sale and will be treated as a reserve and not a guide.

14. Vendors are responsible for taking their Rams to the sale ring and returning them to the pens after being offered for sale.

15. All sheep may be delivered to the auction premises on the day of sale between 7am-9am or the evening before between 4pm-6pm by prior arrangement with the Auctioneer. Limited straw for bedding will be provided but vendors must bring their own feed / buckets etc

EasyCare Sale Report at Kivells Auctioneers, Exeter 13/09/2024

A fair gathering of EasyCare folk at what turned out to be a lovely day.

We kicked off with Mr Alderman's smart organic yearling ewes, who are off to Dorset at £180 & £175 per head. A good consistent run of ewes from D Shepherd at £192 & £188 per head. Mr Bradley Prouse declined to sell his biggest ewes at the price offered and took them home - rightly so. Kevin Kearney's aged ewes sold at £135 per head. Ewe lambs were averaging £120-£122 per head, and extremely good value at that price. Kevin Kearney's 40 very well grown ewe lambs made £144 - £148 per head.

Rams - were generally of good quality and type. Prices from 300-780gns for IR and JM Prouse. Although 90% clearance across the sale the general feeling amongst the vendors is they would like a better price for females. We will, I fear, see increasingly less females at sales and more people selling privately for the same or higher money but less outlay.

This would be a shame. Sales are a good place for people interested in the sheep to come and see a variety of sheep and talk to people who have experience of them. As usual thanks to Sam Nicholson who sold the sheep and the staff at Kivells, particularly Sally-Ann in the office who problem solves and produces the catalogue.

BREED RECORD PRICE FOR A YEARLING RAM - 2,900 gns

Top price yearling ewes from C Levinson, Gloucester achieved £226 going to JS Gladwin in the Cotswolds

Ewe lambs from P Rabbitts, Somerset achieved £141 and went home with MS Keeves, Northamptonshire

The top priced senior ewes [3 Yr olds] from M Lett, Whitchurch made £156 to J Phillips and again went to the Cotswolds.

The top priced yearling ram achieved a breed record of 2,900 guineas or £3,045 for an April 2023 born twin, Scrapie tested ARR/ARR (Group 1) single copy myostatin gene carrier from JE & MS Davies, Aberystwyth selling to JM & VJ Howard, West Yorkshire

The top priced senior ram was achieved twice by R Westalls, Burnley selling two rams bred by D Steen, Moffat both 2021 born and both making 500gns. The first sold to L Morris, I of W and the other to Scott's, Worcestershire

A ram lamb from M Lett made to 250 gns selling to J Hewitt, Minehead

Other notable achievements in the sale:

There were 14 rams over 1000 guineas.

JE and MS Davies over 8 lots achieved bids over 1,000 gns on 6 of their rams.

Ffosyficer Ltd of Pembrokeshire achieved over 1000 gns for 4 of their 7 lots with 1900 gns being the 2nd highest bid in the sale, to J & S Anderson, Lanarkshire.

In the ewes C Levinson swept the board in the highest prices but newcomers NJ & R Dods from Northumberland achieved £201 for a pen of yearling ewes.

Buyers attended from all over the UK with their newly purchased EasyCare sheep returning back with them.

The general consensus was there was a sheep to do a job for everyone and it seemed on the whole the vendors were satisfied with their prices.

That said, I will repeat what Jo Hewitt said at Exeter, we will find less and less females coming to the sales if folk are only prepared to pay less than spring hogg killing prices. We had some entries that let the side down but overall the standard of sheep brought forward was to an excellent standard and even the ones in need of some decent grass found a buyer.

SCAB – it is recommended that all sheep are treated for scab. It is in the vendors interest to declare any treatments/ withdrawal periods relevant to the sheep.

SPECIAL REGULATIONS & CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

1. The sale will be held subject to the Rules and Regulations of the EasyCare Sheep Society, the conditions of sale as recommended by the LAA and the Auctioneers standard conditions of sale.

2. All sheep offered for sale must be the property of a current member of the Society. All sheep must have EasyCare printed on management part of tag (easy to arrange with your own tag supplier) or an additional tag must be purchased from ECSS and inserted at sale.

3. Entry is open to MAEDI-VISNA and non MAEDIA-VISNA flocks. All relevant documentation must accompany all sheep. MV sheep will be sold as per individual market arrangements, please check with the Auctioneers for details.

4. Scrapie/Myostatin Genotyping is voluntary. If you test your sheep, please bring relevant certificates with you. It is the vendor’s responsibility not the Society or the Auctioneers, to provide these certificates for purchasers. Testing results should be included on entry forms. Tested Rams will be given priority in the Sale Order.

5. Sheep must be hornless and have shed their fleece with no signs of having been shorn. Any upgrading Ewes will be sold at end of sale.

6. Ram entries are limited to a maximum of 10 Rams IN TOTAL per vendor. Each vendor may bring Senior Rams no more than 3 and/or Ram Lambs no more than 3 and Yearling Rams within the total of 10 Rams.

7. All Rams will be offered for sale subject to an upset price which will be decided after consultation at the Society AGM of that year. Currently £300 for Yearling Rams and £250 for Senior Rams and Ram Lambs.

8. All sheep are warranted by vendors as correct in mouth and udder at time of sale.

9. All Rams will be sold in Guineas with a commission rate of 5.25%, all Females will be sold in £’s, with a commission of 5.25%. Commission will be split equally between the Auctioneers and the Society.

10. All entries must be made on official entry forms (attached) and must be completed in all respects. Entries must be accompanied by full entry fees (cheque) or be paid by BACS or by card direct to auctioneers. Entries will not be accepted into the catalogue if relevant fees are not forward, and Society Membership has not been paid

11. Substitutes are allowed. Details of substitutes must be logged with the Auctioneer one week prior to the sale. Any late entries are at the discretion of the Auctioneer and will be sold at the end of the sale list. Uncatalogued sheep will NOT be offered for sale.

12. All transactions, either by auction or by private treaty following the sale must be passed through the Auctioneers sale office.

13. Vendors shall have the right to place a reserve price on any or all of their sheep. This must be notified to the Auctioneers in writing, preferably before the sale and will be treated as a reserve and not a guide.

14. Vendors are responsible for taking their Rams to the sale ring and returning them to the pens after being offered for sale.

15. All sheep may be delivered to the auction premises on the day of sale between 7am-9am or the evening before between 4pm-6pm by prior arrangement with the Auctioneer. Limited straw for bedding will be provided but vendors must bring their own feed / buckets etc

Rams & ewes - Society Sale Protocol

FROM THE 2024 SELLING SEASON WE WILL ONLY ALLOW RAM LAMBS AND YEARLING RAMS TO BE SOLD WITH BOTH SCRAPIE AND MYOSTATIN RESULTS, IF YOU TEST, YOU MUST TEST FOR BOTH. SENIOR RAMS MAY BE PRESENTED WITH WHATEVER PAPERWORK YOU HAVE GOT AT THE TIME
 

We ask that breeders check their rams prior to selling. Do a check of the testicles, make sure the rams are good with their mobility etc as we will pull out anything we feel is not to breed standard [see the Breed Standard on the website] or is suspect in mouth, legs, feet, or testicles.

With regards to a fertility test we have reserved judgement on this as to be honest it simply states on the day it was tested it was fertile but from the sale in September to the rams going out at the beginning of November onwards anything can happen to them which is beyond the Society's control. Therefore, it is prudent to either put extra rams out or take up insurance.

Ewes must be sound in the udder, legs, and mouth. They must have fully shed their fleece without assistance. They must be clear eyed and free of any injury or lameness.

All rams and ewes presented for sale must be tagged with double tags bearing the word EasyCare or EC on their tags.

If you are MV accredited you will need to provide the paperwork beforehand to the auction mart and they will provide separate accommodation. All MV accredited stock is sold first into a clean ring. The Society does not currently require all stock to be MV accredited. Most, if not all markets ask that stock is dipped or jabbed for scab. Withdrawal dates must be noted and stated on the entry form.

With regards other health checks, if the vendor has carried out certain procedures e.g. Heptovac, worming etc we ask that this is made known prior to the sale so it can be put in the particulars. If NASAL tests have been taken to establish a ram's myostatin status AND scrapie status, again the reports for these tests must be shown to the market and the information presented in the particulars. We also recommend you laminate copies of the test results and put them on the selling pen as it makes it clear to prospective purchasers what they are buying. Vendors must provide the results to the purchaser after the sale so they have the results for their own records.

Any further health checks are entirely at the vendors discretion we would simply say that it is good farming practice to isolate newly purchased stock for a period to assess their health.

If the seller has in mind to make their stock available for export, they must be MV accredited, must have an up-to-date Brucella test and possibly more legislation could be in force by the time the September sales arrive so a visit to the Animal and Plant Health website is always a good idea.

As a Society we can only make a judgement based on what we see on the day. We make it clear to everyone to present strong, healthy stock in the best condition they can but without overlooking the fact that we are a commercial breed and purchasers don't expect rams to have been stoked full of food or preened and polished.

We do not issue pedigree certificates.

Finally, you must be a fully paid-up member to enter the Society Sales. Membership is £35 per annum
